Welcome First Year Students!

Two students looking out the window on the 8th floor of the SLCI remember my first week of university. I was 17, five hours from where I grew up and living alone for the first time. To be honest, I did not know whether I was more excited or nervous. I came to Ryerson not knowing much about the campus, downtown Toronto or how to be a successful university student. I wish the Student Learning Centre had been open in my first week. If it were, I know exactly how I would’ve used it.

As soon as you walk in the front doors of the SLC, there are student Specialists waiting at the SLC Welcome Centre to help the Ryerson community in any way that they can. The desk is also the meeting point for daily tours of the building. I loved exploring the SLC on my own and finding my favourite floor through trial and error, but I should have taken a tour. It gives you insight to the building through the eyes of upper years and ideas on how you can best use the space. Not to mention, it’s a great way to meet new people!

After the tour, I would have gone up to the 8th floor. The top floor of the SLC has become my refuge. As I watch Yonge-Dundas Square from above, I notice the ads change and people shuffle to and from the Eaton Centre, and suddenly Toronto doesn’t seem as overwhelming.

With all that the SLC has to offer, there is a place for everyone to find where they’re most comfortable. University becomes less overwhelming when you take advantage of the various spaces designed to ensure students’ success at university. The possibilities are endless. Take a tutorial at RULA’s Digital Media Experience (DME) on Floor 3 and play with new technologies to learn a new skill or two! Discover the resources at Student Learning Support (SLS) on Floor 4 and ace your classes. Walk through to the Library from the bridge on Floor 2 to make the most of the 21st Century Library and find the perfect book in the SLC’s sister tower Ryerson University Library and Archives (RULA).

The SLC is a dynamic environment. It adapts to each and everyone of us by providing the resources and opportunities that will help make university an unforgettable experience. Take it from me, if you don’t know where to start, start here. The SLC is shaped for us and by us, making it one of the best places to start getting to know Ryerson.
