Our university experience is undeniably tied to our personal development and growth. At the end of it all, I believe that I will leave with a sense of appreciation and a desire to pay it forward. I hope to someday emulate Ryerson graduates who decide to give back to the school that gave so much to them. One of these inspiring students is Shivraj Sagar, a recent mechanical engineering graduate.

Summer Lovin’ the SLC

What goes on at the Student Learning Centre when the majority of Ryerson’s students disappear for the summer? Even though most of the university’s students might be on vacation, the SLC isn’t – we’re open, supporting students and their needs year-round!

There are plenty of events happening at the SLC this summer. June was Pride Month and at the SLC, we showed our true colours and displayed our Pride to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community! Prime Minister Trudeau even got in on the celebrations and showcased it on his social media using our SLC as his backdrop. Your Pride is our Pride!Onlookers watching the Toronto Pride parade as Prime Minister Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire march.

Happy Canada 150!

Wishing you all a happy Canada Day! 

To mark the sesquicentennial, the SLC will be closed Saturday, July 1 and Monday, July 3, 2017.

Congress Through Student Eyes

This past month, our campus hosted Congress 2017 and celebrated its theme: “The Next 150, On Indigenous Lands.” Congress participants, along with the Ryerson community, looked to the future of Canada by reflecting on its past through a series of innovative workshops, presentations and events. Excited to take part in this historical event, we decided to explore a few events happening around campus and seeA tipi installation what Congress was all about.

The first event we visited took root in Pitman Quad through the efforts of the Indigenous Communication and Design Network. Bringing an Indigenous worldview into focus, this creative Tipi installation, titled Survival Through Sovereignty, displayed the names of 150 missing Indigenous youth. Between daily Tipi teachings, visitors were encouraged to gather around the central fire to share stories, learn about Indigenous culture and offer a prayer by burning a combination of sage, cedar and tobacco.

Redesigning the SLC’s Gould Street Entrance

In response to your feedback, we are pleased to announce that we will be redesigning our Gould Street entrance doors! The project is expected to last 10 weeks, from June 19 to August 28, 2017.

With your needs in mind, the new entrance doors will:

  • Be lighter, making them easier to operate
  • Moderate airflow, enhancing temperature control in the SLC  
  • Be more sustainable, adapting to the SLC’s high use frequency

The SLC will remain open during the redesign and will be accessible to students and the community through an alternative entrance. To access the building, please enter through the Library Building at 350 Victoria Street. From there, simply proceed to Floor 2 and cross the Library bridge leading to the SLC.

The Inaugural Parodos Festival

Join Blue Parodos Festival poster depicting a dancerus in celebrating the Parodos Festival, put on by the SLC’s newest academic stakeholder, the School of Performance. The inaugural festival is part of Ryerson’s sesquicentennial celebrations and will set the stage for the brand new Performance Zone. This event is open to the public and will take place from June 5 – 18 in the School of Performance, as well as the SLC Amphitheatre

Parodos will be presenting performances featuring a variety of artists – including both Ryerson students and local artists – to showcase diverse talent and foster creativity in the next generation shaping Toronto’s art scene.

Finding Your Way at the SLC

Earlier this year, while walking through the SLC, I passed by RULA’s Digital Media Experience (DME) and a 3D model of our campus caught my eye. I’ve always noticed that the Ryerson spirit shines particularly bright through certain students. The team at the SLC concurs and is recognizing exemplary Ryerson students through its first SLC Student Engagement and Leadership Award.

Inaugural winners, Josh and Adrianna, are featured on the SLC SEAL Team Award poster Embracing leadership and engaging the Ryerson community is at the heart of the SLC. This understanding has become second nature to our inaugural recipients: Adrianna Militano, a first year graduate student in Public Policy and Administration, and Joshua Howe, a fourth year undergraduate student in Media Production.
