Toronto Urban Design Awards Features the SLC

Exterior night shot of the SLC“This contemporary, signature building creates a strong urban gateway to Ryerson University, marking the campus’ presence in the heart of downtown Toronto. Its south-facing plaza holds the corner, yet is also inviting: a geometric-tiled canopy provides a sheltering ceiling in “Ryerson blue,” while broad, sunny steps are well-used by students and passers-by. Our SLC: One of Canada’s Most Iconic Buildings!

The Entrance of Ryerson University by Mandalaybus.“When [Ryerson] had the opportunity to construct a building fronting on Yonge Street (on the spot formerly occupied by the old flagship Sam the Record Man store), it made its mark with this sparkling, asymmetrical blue-and-white glass cube designed by Zeidler Partnership Architects of Toronto and the Norwegian firm Snøhetta. Students participated in the consultation process, even choosing the building’s furniture, which can be rearranged to suit their needs.”

Imagine Yourself Here

What is the SLC?

Ryerson is transforming the corner of Yonge and Gould with a stunning building that is dedicated to you: the Student Learning Centre (SLC).

As the building rapidly approaches the final construction stages, everyone on campus (and in the city) eagerly anticipates its opening in early 2015.

More than 155,000 square feet of new space over eight floors will provide enough room for approximately 2,300 students to study, collaborate, and share ideas.

Student consultations have been a priority from the start of this project. Everything from space function and design to furniture selection. The SLC will become a physical manifestation of Ryerson’s spirit and a world-class destination for generations of students to come. Let’s take a tour and imagine yourself there.
