“The Society of Façade Engineering has awarded Ryerson University’s Student Learning Centre in Toronto with a Façade of the Year for 2015 award in the new building category.

“Based upon the simple premise of the competition, which is to recognize excellence in façade design and engineering as a specialist discipline, this year’s competition fulfilled those objectives with exciting entries from around the world,” said Chris Macey, chair of the award judges. “The judges believe the winners have significantly raised the bar in terms of imagination, execution, and vision with some exciting projects that are world class by any standards.””

Ryerson’s Student Learning Centre to Host Mass Exodus 2016

Over the past year, the SLC Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) Team has measured the success of the SLC on our ability to quickly respond to students’ needs.

We strive to provide exceptional experiences for students and the community, and we do this by testing assumptions. This year, we will stretch the current assumption on how to maximize and use space in the SLC.

“Ryerson University’s new student-learning centre in downtown Toronto is now complete. Designed by Oslo-based firm Snohetta that worked with Zeidler Partnership Architects, the building was inspired by the gathering spaces of ancient Greece, where socialising and learning went hand in hand. The gleaming eight-storey centre will provide students with study areas, seminar rooms, lounges and cafés. Perhaps more importantly, the new building solidifies Ryerson’s presence in Toronto. Though the university was established in 1948 and is now one of the country’s better-known institutions, most of its departments were previously tucked away in other buildings or down side streets. Now the heart of the university can be found right in the heart of the city.”

“Snøhetta and Zeidler Partnership Architects have designed a new Student Learning Centre (SLC) for Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.

Inspired by the historical gathering spaces of the Stoas and Agoras in ancient Greece where learning was inherently social, the lively SLC gives students eight uniquely-designed floors of generous space to meet, study, and exchange ideas. Conceived as a library without books, the design develops natural conditions for groups of people to interact while also offering areas for controlled and introspective study. Most importantly, it encourages students to make the space their own. The SLC is a library built for the digital age that encourages students to interact with their physical environment. Since its opening, the new campus landmark has become a popular hub filled with student activity from 7am to 1am each day.”

Imagine Yourself Here

What is the SLC?

Ryerson is transforming the corner of Yonge and Gould with a stunning building that is dedicated to you: the Student Learning Centre (SLC).

As the building rapidly approaches the final construction stages, everyone on campus (and in the city) eagerly anticipates its opening in early 2015.

More than 155,000 square feet of new space over eight floors will provide enough room for approximately 2,300 students to study, collaborate, and share ideas.

Student consultations have been a priority from the start of this project. Everything from space function and design to furniture selection. The SLC will become a physical manifestation of Ryerson’s spirit and a world-class destination for generations of students to come. Let’s take a tour and imagine yourself there.
