Ever need a silent place to get work done? If so, the seventh floor is the space for you!
Known as The Forest, this floor is dedicated to providing students with the quiet study space they need, especially during exam periods. It is home to quiet and silent study spaces, a graduate study space, and bookable Collaborative and Group Work Rooms (CGWRs).
Students can use the silent study space with zero noise tolerance on this floor when they need to work without distraction. There is also a quiet study space on this floor and CGWRs for quiet collaborative work.
“I like to come to the seventh floor because it is very quiet and focused atmosphere,” said Aileen Falcones Guzman, a student in the history program. “It’s so different because as soon as you walk into the seventh floor, it’s quiet.”
The graduate study space can be accessed by a card programmed for graduate student access. This area is solely designated for graduate students! It has open study space, collaborative work space, access to the silent study space, and six CGWRs dedicated to grad students only.
There are many features on this floor that help make it the quiet study space that it is. The wall and ceiling carpet on this floor help control the noise and absorb some sound, and the tables and chairs are designed for individual quiet study to help reduce noise.
On the seventh floor, it is the responsibility of every student to respect those around them and maintain a quiet, and focused environment. That’s why we did some renovations to this floor over the summer based on feedback from our students!
The CGWRs on this floor have been insulated to improve sound absorption. This means that although the rooms are NOT soundproof, sound travel from room to room is reduced when doors are closed and soft voices are being used.
“The seventh floor is my favourite place because seeing other people quietly studying motivates me.
It’s a nice break between the other floors that’s great for focusing,” said Soonalika, a creative industries student. “If everyone follows the quiet floor rules, it’s a great atmosphere to study in.”
New whiteboards and AV tech equipment have been installed in each of the CGWRs. The newly installed whiteboards are easier to use, clean and maintain, and the new AV tech has been simplified to avoid breakage and confusion!
Along the elevator wall, you will notice a new mural installation created by Student Graphic Designer, Soonalika and Creative and Communications Coordinator, Jaleesa that promotes seventh floor etiquette.
This floor is a place where students come to work in a quiet environment. We are dedicated to making the student learning experience world class, but we cannot do this alone! It is important that each student plays their part in helping maintain quiet by respecting their fellow peers.
